Throughout his too-short life, Stephan Grundy devoted himself to the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Germanic peoples who inhabited swaths of Europe from the pre-Christian era through the Middle Ages.

Scholar, author, healer, musician and craftsman, Stephan became a respected figure in the field of Germanic Studies, and a leader in developing community and spiritual practices.

Drawing on his study and research at Southern Methodist University, St. Andrews’s University, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Uppsala University, and Girton College, Cambridge, he published multiple studies of Germanic lore and tradition, both under his own name and the pen name Kveldulf Gundarsson. His fiction won an especially wide audience. His first novel, Rhinegold, became a best-seller in Germany and two subsequent works saw significant commercial success in Germany and the U.S.

At their home in Ireland, he and his wife, Melodi Lammond Grundy, became key figures in the Society for Creative Anachronism. They opened their home for feasts, festivals, role-playing games and many other activities. As Kvelduf Gundarsson, Stephan also served as Warder of the Lore for The Troth, a center for the study and practice of Germanic Heathenry. When not writing, Stephan devoted himself to crafts that included woodworking, the use of herbs, and jewelry making. His co-founded firm, Oro Jewelry, specialized in original designs based on historic models.

By the end of Stephan’s life, he had completed twelve novels (three co-written with Melodi) and more than a dozen works of scholarship. He was respected as a serious scholar who was generous with his time and ideas. He was also known for working to ensure that the organizations he took part in were both grounded in Germanic practices and open to people of all backgrounds.
